Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) solutions are location-based services used in numerous industries, including healthcare, retail and manufacturing. RTLS offers a precise, indoor tracking system based on several technologies such as active radio frequency identification (RFID), second generation infrared, low frequency RF and Bluetooth low energy (BLE). Commercially available for 40 years, passive RFID identifies tagged objects and people using radio waves that are sent by a specialized RFID reader. Nurse Call Solution

Adding accurate location information to the nurse call system provides enhanced communication capabilities for staff, faster response times for patients, and a more hands-free approach to patient care. CenTrak’s Second Generation Infrared (Gen2IR™) delivers certainty-based location data and rapid location updates. These systems work simultaneously to create substantial gains in workflow efficiency. When a patient calls for assistance, the corridor light over the patient’s door illuminates and a nurse is notified that a call has been placed via staff follow tones at the nearest Telligence station. When a caregiver enters the patient room, the RTLS-enabled staff badge automatically cancels the call and time-records their arrival. Their presence is documented and the nurse call corridor light illuminates a specific color based on their role, showcasing to other staff members that a caregiver is present. Upon staff exit from the patient room, the corridor light will automatically turn off, and the system will document the amount of time staff spent with the patient. RTLS technology also helps to better facilitate staff rounding by documenting how long it has been since a clinical-staff member has entered the room. This data enables Telligence to send proactive reminders to nurses when rounding is due or overdue on a particular room – greatly increasing patient satisfaction and reducing calls.     Hand Hygiene Compliance Monitoring in Health Care

    Monitoring hand hygiene compliance can take several different forms. Having trained monitors manually observe and report hand hygiene activities was once considered the gold standard. However, manual direct observation is labor intensive, expensive, and only accounts for 1.2% to 3.5% of all hand hygiene events. Additionally, the most significant disadvantage is the potential to influence the behavior of those who know they are being observed. This is known as, the Hawthorne Effect and has been proven to cause Hand Hygiene Compliance rates to be overstated by up to 300%. Measuring the amount of product consumed for hand hygiene could also reveal increases or decreases in compliance. However, this is not contextually specific and is unable to account for things like spillage or family usage, etc. Surveying patients for their observations of hand hygiene practices during their healthcare experience is another way to collect this data but inaccurate recall is often an issue.
